Use Special Events Wisely

Special events and professional events can benefit almost any small business or businesspeople. Just as a job fair allows a professional to distribute her resume and meet various employers in her industry — in other words, market herself — special events such as professional shows and conferences enable small businesses to market themselves.
Networking is also an important part of professional events. Even if all you meet is others in the same industry, making these contacts can help you in the long run. For example, I have gotten work and clients from other writers who had too much work to take a project, or who needed to collaborate with another professional on a project; I have also gotten work from professionals in related fields, such as from graphic designers.
Business events and professional conferences are usually set up to operate as smoothly as possible. To that end, the crowd needs to flow a certain way. Take, for example, a job fair: Employers’ booths are set up to allow for traffic as well as facilitate lingering job seekers, but there are also crowd control rope, jersey barricades, and the occasional plastic barrier telling people where they can and can’t go.
Special events are great ways to market yourself and/or your business. Next time you hear of a professional event in your area — whether it be a job fair, a business conference, or another special event — see if there is a way you can use it to your advantage.
