Actors Resumes Are Often Questionable

I remember in high school hearing from someone who wanted to do some summer theatre that she could “pad” her resume by putting, for instance, that she played Lady Macbeth in Brite Lite Theatre simply because she read the role aloud for British Lit class! And it got me to thinking that it was normal and expected that actors lie on their resumes because, after all, no one was really going to hire you unless you passed the audition anyway, so what did it matter?
Is this really an accepted practice? I mean, is there some sort of background check that one can do to check on all this, short of dialing up the directors themselves? Well, there should be. It’s hard to guess how much this really matters in the professional industry, me being just a lowly old drama teacher. If you fit the role, what does it matter what your resume says? I can see how important educational background is, and of course, you’d provide a few phone numbers for references. But if I am ignorant and it is quite important to see a person’s actual theatrical background, then I think you need to get some sort of employment screening background. But who would store that information?
I think maybe the Actor’s Equity Organizations should be the one to store all this-even for non-union jobs, don’t you think?
