Kids say the darnedest things

It was so adorable. We’ve been having poetry week in class this week, so I read them William Wordsworth’s “Daffodils” and they made daffodils with paper cut outs, and “O Captain My Captain” and the whole class made a huge papier-mâché boat. Today, I told them to write their own poems and then make an art project to go along. I gave them a subject; I told them to write about the sun. A few misinterpreted this and wrote about themselves as sons, but only one of the kids came up with a poem about solar power and home solar systems.
I think he got that phrase from his parents, though, because when it came to drawing it, instead of drawing solar power panels, he drew a planetary solar system with houses instead of planets. It was so cute. I love working with this class; they’re open to everything, and they’re not inhibited or ashamed of the way they use their wonderful minds. It’s so very refreshing! And I couldn’t believe the way they took to poetry; I was worried it might be a bit beyond their reading level or comprehension, but they loved all the images, or as one put it, the “mind pictures”. How adorable is that?
