Not long ago I was speaking to my long widowed next door neighbor. During the course of our conversation, we some how got on the topic of Florida drug treatment facilities. Apparently, her husband had been highly susceptible to addictive habits during the 1950’s and beyond.
Fortunately the destruction of his activities didn’t begin until a few years after he had retired from a long career as a commercial airline pilot. One could only imagine what might have happened had his problems surfaced just a decade sooner.
Initially, my neighbor did what so many wives of addicts do, and that was to ignore the problem. Later she enabled him to great degrees in her attempts not to lose her standing in the social circles they participated in.
It wasn’t until the 2nd time he had been stopped for DWI, and received his first conviction that she decided she would get him into a quality Florida alcohol treatment place.
After my neighbor’s husband was released, he was actually quite successful in that he never relapsed back into a life of addiction and pain. Given the fact their marriage lasted another 15 years, I could tell she was extremely happy that she’d made the choices to save her husband’s life.
