Mall Cop Plus

I’ve been a security guard for the last year since I finished college.  I got my degree in communications, but the job market was so thing when I got out that I had to take whatever job I could get, and a job with this security company just fell into my lap.  I am what they call a general security guard, which means I do nighttime and weekend security all over the place-malls, warehouses, sports and concert venues and anywhere else that needs nighttime or weekend security.

Malls and warehouses tend to be the most eventful because they generally contain things that people actually want.  I’ve had to call the police a few times and have even caught a few people in the act of trying to break in.  Usually, though, even those places are quiet.  Nighttime security guard just is not the most exciting gig in the world.  Since I don’t exactly work with an elite team of security guards, I guess I actually tend to hope it doesn’t get too exciting because I’d most likely end up like “dead security guard #4″ in some cliché espionage movie.

Construction gigs are actually the worst.  First, construction companies usually only hire one security guard, so its usually a loner job; and even if they do hire two, you have to worry about getting one of the annoying guys because you’re stuck there with only him or her for hours on end.  Then, there’s always the prospect of people trying to steal construction equipment or materials; you’d be surprised how much street value dirt screening plants, rock screens, jackhammers and whatnot have on the street; and I can’t even count how many times I’ve caught people trying to steal copper piping.

The worst part, though, is kids.  They are always trying to play on the equipment and use the buildings to do drugs or have some stupid club.  I wouldn’t even bother with them because I know they aren’t going to steal anything, except they explained to me at the security company that the company and consequently any security guard on duty are responsible for any preventable damage that happens during a shift.  That means that if those kids break a $30,000 portable screener, the company has to pay for it, and I subsequently would get fired and possibly sued.  I don’t want that.
