The Gardner Museum in Boston

In Boston, on New Year’s Day in 1903, Isabella Stewart Gardner invited guests to her museum, where they listened to Bach, Mozart, and Schumann, and looked out over a courtyard of fine flowers and took in the sight of some of the finest paintings of art in the United States. Today, one hundred and seven years later, the Gardner Museum remains a vital aesthetic hub, filled with galleries of paintings, tapestries, fine furniture, and sculpture — all from societies that span over 30 centuries.

The Gardner Museum provides a venue, as well, for today’s scholars, artists and musicians. Over 2,500 artistic and historic artifacts are contained inside three stories of a 15th Century Venetian-style palace. The artists represented include Botticelli, Degas, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Raphael, Sargent, and Whistler. That opening day the music was provided by members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra , after which doors were opened to reveal the amazing interior courtyard, filled with flowers and illuminated by Japanese lanterns.

For travelers who visit the top Boston hotels and who are seeking out the finer things in life, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is not to be missed. It is one of the few museums in the world where the collection, building, and installations have all been created by a single person, arranged specifically to always educate and enrich the public, which is one reason why visitors will discover that the museum’s symbol is that of a phoenix (indicating immortality) with the phrase C’est mon plaisir, translated as “It is my pleasure.”

Sherman Alexie is Seattle

When the Seattle literary scene was at its height, somewhere between the 70s and the 90s, the independent bookstores were the place to be and to be seen. They’re still excellent locations to spend the better part of an afternoon, and book hounds often see their days turn into evenings. Fortunately, it’s an environment that’s very conducive to reading, and some of the best places are open late. One can still see readings and book signings by famous authors and the occasional celebrity guest, and there’s something very rich about the whole experience.

The thriving scene today is due to the efforts of booksellers and publishers from the earlier days, not long ago, and the talent and perseverance of the authors they promoted. It’s a much more difficult business now, with the publishing industry in a kind of tail-spin, but it was never an easy thing to make a living as a writer. One of the great fixtures of the heyday was a young man of great stature and long black hair. Sherman Alexie , born on the Spokane reservation in 1967, started causing publishers to turn their heads when he started releasing books of poetry. By the time he released his collection of short stories, ” The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven ,” he was already something of a legend.

In these early moments, no one knew who he looked like yet, so he could unobtrusively sneak into the reading and pretend that he was a drunken audience member. As he started making the crowd nervous, he jumped up and told them his name, and started to read, cold sober, and electric. These are the kinds of moments one hopes for when booking Seattle hotel reservations these days. He’s still around, and still writing amazing works with a tenacity that the world has rarely seen. The visionary writer, who suffered from childhood illness in the tradition of the best story-tellers, set the bar high, but that doesn’t mean there’s not another great writer coming down the pike. And the city is waiting.

If you haven’t been to Pittsburgh’s National Aviary , now is a great time to check it out. The new Grasslands exhibit just opened for the summer crowd. This new exhibit is really exciting as it allows one to walk through as birds fly all around you, maybe even land on you, so you can have that very up-close-and-personal experience with birds from around the world. The new Grasslands exhibit is a part of the National Aviary’s multi-phase expansion and renovation project, so for those of you who have been to the National Aviary, it’s time to visit again.

The National Aviary is the only independent indoor, nonprofit zoo in America dedicated entirely to birds. The diverse collection consists of over 600 birds that represent more than 200 species from around the world, and a good majority of them are threatened or endangered in the wild. The aviary is an organization comprised of environmentalist, conservationists, educators and researchers. Their aim is to provide outstanding programs to educate their audience; to present high quality, recreational family fun that a zoological institution can offer; to save endangered species by preserving their natural habitats; to continue breeding programs geared especially for the endangered and to conduct purposeful avian research that will engender a genuine appreciation of nature and a healthy respect for natural law. The National Aviary’s goal is to teach responsibility , and to make us all aware that we are stewards of our planet.

Plan to stay overnight at one of the hotels Pittsburg offers so you can get to the National Aviary as soon as they open up. Hours are: 9am to 5pm; ticket prices are $10 for adults and $8.50 for children under 13. Active duty or any military personnel get in free. You can bring a lunch-bag and a cooler, because there are no provisions for food or concessions. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to see nearly every continent represented by the most colorful, intelligent birds you’ll ever get to see up close.

A vacation in Honolulu Hawaii is guaranteed to include a few things. One is that you will enjoy some delicious island food while you are there and another is that you will spend some quality time on the beach. Beyond that there are numerous other standard options and some of them occur in the water while others are land oriented. And of the water, or marine, variety, swimming with dolphins is an ever increasing in popularity option. The best Honolulu hotels are also excellent resources on the different dolphin encounter programs that exist in the city and throughout the island of Oahu.

Even if you have never been in a pool or an ocean with a dolphin before, the various programs that are offered are intended to suit people of all experience levels. Many of the people who encounter dolphins in the water do so for the first time in their lives while they are visiting Honolulu. And this is just one of the numerous great and sometimes life changing events that can occur during your vacation there.

Sea Life Park on the island is outside of the city of Honolulu and is one of the places that offers the chance to have personal encounters not only with dolphins but also with sea lions and to watch sea turtles and penguins. Another option, though it should be noted that this company offers experiences and tours with the dolphins and other marine life in the wild, is Wild Side Specialty Tours . One of the intentions behind these tours and encounters is to encourage marine life and environmental awareness and appreciation and also to introduce participants to the dolphins as they exist naturally in the ocean. Whichever program is right for you, swimming with dolphins can be an experience of a lifetime.

Being Happy With What You Choose

happyMy boyfriend and I have very different approaches when it comes to shopping. My goal is to find a product that satisfies my needs. My boyfriend’s goal is to get the best product available as defined by some objective source. I believe that my method leads to greater happiness with the things that I have.

A recent example of this came up when we decided to switch to a new web host for our shared website. I wanted to find affordable web hosting that would meet our needs in terms of speed, storage and tech support from the company. My boyfriend insisted that we had to read dozens of reviews to determine which is the best web hosting service as chosen by experts in the industry.

The process took a lot longer doing it his way than doing it my way would have taken. In the end, he wasn’t totally satisfied because he worried that maybe he had made the wrong choice. He figured there might be some better option out there that we hadn’t found. I believe that we made a good choice because the web host that we chose meets our needs. I’m able to be content with the choice even if there is an objectively “better” option out there.

How do you make purchase decisions? Does your method make you happy?

Attending a Digital Document Webinar

Posted on October 16, 2009
Filed Under Technology | Leave a Comment

One of my biggest beliefs is that it is very important to keep up with the latest business technologies to better serve my customers.  I suppose that makes sense considering we have a store that sells technology (including computers, network attached scanners, printers and more) to local businesses.  Even though we compete with some big box stores, I like to think that we can provide better expertise and service than they can, and we do whatever we need to do to reach that goal.

So it should come as no surprise that I am attending a webinar on digital document management.  Basically the focus will be how to integrate digital documents into any organization and it will cover how to attain that goal.

The webinar is being put on by a number of prominent document imaging companies and they will be highlighting the benefits and challenges of implementing a digital document management system.  Though some people might find it to be a dry topic, I am really looking forward to it as it is another opportunity to serve our customers.

It will also be a good opportunity for our business to provide a service that is currently unavailable in our community, which should mean it could be a very profitable opportunity.  So, I am hoping that the information that I learn will be a good fit for our business – worst case, I will have fun, right?

Discussing Hearing Problems with Older Employees

Posted on September 22, 2009

hearing

It can be a delicate business, bringing up hearing problems with an older employee.  Many people tend to be resistant to believing their hearing is going as they age.  That’s why it’s so common to see older people who refuse to wear their hearing aids, or keep them turned down all the time, forcing everyone who talks to them to speak loudly and repeat things frequently.

Of course, that kind of behavior isn’t good for business, so it’s important to bring it up if you think hearing problems are making it difficult for your older employee to do his or her job correctly.

You can’t really require that an older employee go to a hearing clinic, but you can definitely bring up to them the fact that their hearing seems to be affecting their quality of work.  Theoretically, if you bring up your concerns and make it clear that their job performance is suffering, most people should be able to make the connection themselves and go see a doctor uncoerced.

The Americans with Disabilities Act makes it illegal to discriminate against someone with a disability, as long as they can still do the important parts of the job.  This is another part of why the topic of hearing problems is such a delicate one.  However, you are only required to make concessions for your disabled employees that do not pose an undue hardship — and only if they request it.  So if your employee is still refusing to get help, and their hearing problems are significantly affecting the quality of their work, you are not obligated to continue to employ them.
